The freezer that the raid found in the doctor's office contained the bodies of over two dozen babies. The cause of death for the babies has not yet been determined; however, it is suspected that they may have been killed during illegal, late term abortions. Their bodies have been sent for examination to try and determine the exact cause of death as part of the ongoing investigation.
The raid on the West Philadelphia office was carried out as a joint operation between various law enforcement branches in the area including the local Philadelphia police and officials from the DEA (Drug Enforcement Agency) along with investigators from the state's medical licensing authorities who had reportedly had previous complaints against Gosnell for employing unlicensed personell that were then treating patients at his office. While the raids were prompted by the death of a woman during an abortion in late November according to the news channel's reporting, it is unclear why it took authorities over three months to act. An autopsy is still pending to determine the exact cause of death of the woman involved.
Philly's Eyewitness News is reporting that Dr. Gosnell's medical license has been suspended but there is no word as of yet as to what charges will be brought against him. There has also not been a statement or any information as of yet coming from Gosnell or his legal representatives so one can only imagine what unimaginable reason he could possibly offer for this very disturbing behavior. As is often the case in an ongoing investigation, many details are not yet available but the bizarre nature of this case is definitely one that this writer will be watching quite carefully.
