Great News from Iraq -- Iraq is Kicking Us Out?

Thank him, say nice things about him, send him air kisses and our fond expressions of appreciation -- Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki has given America the best news in a decade. The Iraqi Prime Minster said there will definitely not be an extension of the deadline for the withdrawal of U.S. troops in 2011, saying that Iraq could handle its own security moving forward.

Reports the Wall Street Journal -- "This agreement is not subject to extension, not subject to alteration. It is sealed," he said in an interview with The Wall Street Journal. Maliki said the only chance there would be any U.S. troops in Iraq after the 2011 withdrawal would be if the two countries negotiated an entirely new Status of Forces Agreement, which took a year to work out last time, in 2008, and was strongly opposed by many in Maliki's own political bloc."

Oh, bite your tongue, Mr Maliki, no conditions, please. No weasel clause.

Mr. Obama; if he is wise, will send Mr Maliki a nice New Year's present and will dance, and will hold Mr. Maliki to his word. We should get out and be glad that the Iraqis have the good sense to show us the door, and we should show better sense by hightailing it / or strolling out in a dignified but quick pace, without looking back. In the meantime, we should hope and pray that Iraqis don't change their minds.
