Yesterday, the net was buzzing with news that the dictator Muammar Gaddafi of Libya would be given a get off scotch free card. This morning the word is the deal is stalled, if not dead. Both sides are denying that there ever was a deal.
The Daily Beast is reporting the details of the offered deal. Its source, says the Beast, is a key insider in the ranks of the Libyan rebels.
According to the Beast's source, Colonel Gaddafi sent a letter, in the care of a former Libyan Government cabinet minster, "offering to call a meeting of the General People's Congress where he would submit his resignation. A formal process would give then appearance of a democratic turnover. In exchange, Gaddafi would require that the congress declare immunity for him and his family. But the interim Transitional Council, overseen by Mustafa Abdel Jalil, the closest thing the Libyan people have as an alternative to Gaddafi, rejected the idea as a 'farce.'"
The rebels took the Gaddafi letter to be a trial balloon, and an attempt to play for time as his forces continued to try to retake captured Libyan cities.
As for the no fly zone enforced by the U.S. and the Europeans?
U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the U.S. won't do its own no fly zone over Libya, won't take the lead in establishing a no fly zone, but would support an internationally backed no-fly zone,.
"I think it's very important that this (revolution?) not be a U.S.-led effort, because this comes from the people of Libya themselves," Secretary Clinton told Sky News. "This doesn't come from the outside. This doesn't come from some Western power or some Gulf country saying this is what you should do, this is how you should live."
Yeah? The USA can't let everybody think that the US Government is only thinking about the oil? Right?
The US is expected to vote for a no-fly zone in the U.N.. China and Russia are expected to veto the proposal, then NATO may institute a no-fly zone, The Prime Minister of Britain seems keen on the establishment of the zone.
In the meantime, Mr. Gaddafi is blaming everybody for the problems in his country. He is blaming Al-Qaeda and he is blaming the West, He is blaming everybody, except himself and his heavy handed regime.
The West wants this mess to end. Gaddafi wants a way out? And the price of oil is climbing.
