One of George W Bush's many follies was the attempt to nation build in Afghanistan, and to seat. Hamid Karzai or anyone into power, in a country that is at its best ungovernable, and at its worse, is feudal, and whose politicians are corrupt. The US had an ally, the Northern Alliance, that at the time was perfect for Taliban removal, and for a very swift US exit. Good judgment and common sense were in short supply when it came to Dubya Bush. He put together things that were never meant to be, and now they are falling apart.
President Obama is stuck in a situation that is sounding in the American press an awful lot like Vietnam. The difference here is that he faces a foe who mustn't be left unchallenged, and he is in a fight, structured foolishly by a cabal of fools, but a fight that he mustn't be seen to be running away from. Al Qaeda and the Taliban movement are a real threat to everybody. That said , Mr. Obama still needs to get the Hell out of Afghanistan, remove the large American and Western armies, which are seen as Christian armies, from that Muslim land. How he does do that? The question is easier than the answer.
Hamid Karzai is doing what petty, greedy, corrupt guys do. He is stealing and is blaming folks, who are faulting him, for not understanding the local situation and culture, which allows, encourages and functions on corruption. And when he is told to quit being a thief, he gets mad with the folks whom have made it so easy for him to steal, and he even threatens to turn against his benefactors and to join his benefactor's foe.
"According to Afghan lawmakers, Karzai threatened twice over the weekend to join the Taliban. 'He said that 'if I come under foreign pressure, I might join the Taliban', said one provincial representative, adding that Karzai threatened to rebrand "rebels" as "resistors" to foreign occupation. Afghanistan will be fixed when its people trust that their president is independent and not a puppet,' Karzai told an assembly of tribal leaders. "We have to demonstrate our sovereignty. We have to demonstrate that we are standing up for our values.'" (The Associated Press)
Well, the Taliban might welcome Karzai for a minute, until it is to their advantage to slit his throat. I predict that slit his throat they would. Karzai is the kind corrupt, stupid leader that al Qaeda rails against. His future is in Switzerland or some other haven for the loot he's being stealing from the Afghan people and from the American tax payer. How should President Obama deal with Karzai? That is another question that is difficult to answer.
