Democrat R
epresentative Bart Stupak, a leader in the House Energy and Commerce Committee was not impressed with the rhetoric of BP CEO Tony Hayward during the CEO's testimony regarding the Gulf oil spill hearing. Stupak characterized Hayward as "absurd and ridiculous," while being interviewed on CNN during "John King, USA." He went on to say, "It was frustrating, not just to me but to the American people." Hayward's testimony was hard to watch, that is for sure. It seemed as though he was ill-prepared, didn't answer questions, and seemed to try with each sentence to limit his own fault. Stupak, however, was really angered due to the fact that the committee had sent Hayward a letter outlining the questions that they wanted answers for, but it was all for not.
It keeps snowballing for the oil company giant. The accident started it all off, where 11 men lost their lives, then every attempt to stop the leak failed, their estimates on the size of the oil spill were proven to be false, and their guess at the volume of oil spewing from the leak point was off by thousands of barrels. The consequences will be huge for this corporation, and they should. Obviously they have been running a business of deceit and lies, and it's finally caught up with them, with a horrific result, with that being one of the biggest environmental disasters ever.
It seems like the only solution will be the relief well, and one can only hope that it resolves that issue. The next step will be the major effort to clean-up the devastated region, which follows with the long-term restoration of the Gulf Coast area that will be fighting for its livelihood.
Time will tell the true impact of this tragedy. The citizens of this country can only hope that rules and regulations are put in place so that his never happens again.
