The Republican governor from Virginia, Robert McDonnell gets the award for embarrassing political move of the day, as he proclaimed April Confederate History Month in his state. This obviously, has caused a just stir among cable networks, news organizations, Democrats, civil rights groups, and will stir up criticism from citizens once the word gets out.
According to CNN he said, "It is important for all Virginians to reflect upon our Commonwealth's shared history, to understand the sacrifices of the Confederate leaders, soldiers and citizens during the period of the Civil War, and to recognize how our history has led to our present." One problem, of the many from his statement, comes from his omission of anything regarding slavery. He has since issued an apology, but it's too late, and there will most likely be a justified firestorm for it, especially since the two Democratic governors before him refused to make April Confederate History Month.
This move is an embarrassment to the entire country. This is like honoring the Klu Klux Klan or the Westboro Baptist Church for a month. Where is the logic and reason? Yes it is history, but it doesn't need to be honored, for a lot of history is not just. The time can be learned about, and many lessons can be taken from it, but putting it in this context is disrespectful. The Confederate Army, during that time, amongst other things, was fighting to keep slavery in the United States of America.
It is actions like this that keep dividing our nation, and keep continuing to cause unneeded controversy. The initial statement is very disrespectful to African Americans and to the entire country. Our nation needs to keep moving forward with rights and equality, and everyone, especially politicians, should know not to make divisive proclamations to this degree. Shame on you, Governor Robert McDonnell.
