Rolling Stone, has published an interview with Gen. Stanley McChrystal, America's man in Afghanistan. The general said that many White House officials have betrayed him, that he was "disappointed" with President Obama after their first meeting, which he said he found the president unprepared for. He felt betrayed by Ambassador Karl Eikenberry, and said that his "real enemy" was "the wimps in the White House." Good Lord! What else didn't this man say?
From Kabul, this morning, Tuesday, Gen. McChrystal issued a statement -- "I extend my sincerest apology for this profile, (in the Rolling Stone). It was a mistake reflecting poor judgment and should never have happened." He couldn't say truer words.
For a serving flag officer, in war time, the commander of troops in the field, to make statements to the press very highly critical of his commander-in-chief is stupid, and it shows a severe lack of professionalism and judgment. Gen. Stanley McChrystal has been ordered to report to the White House tomorrow, Wednesday, for a face-to-face meeting with the President and Vice President.
McChrystal is no MacArthur. MacArthur was a military genius. Harry Truman put up with a lot of MacArthur's insubordination before he showed him the way to the retirement door. Gen. McChrystal has a difficult mission and I doubt any American officer, in the present or from the past, can accomplish it. The General should have had the good sense not to go on record criticizing his commander-in-chief, that is basic. If he doesn't understand that telling shop talk to a reporter would get him into hot water, he is not only dumb but stupid. The President should thank the general for his service and boot him out the door. No commander-in-chief should tolerate an officer who doesn't respect the chain of command. McChrystal, out!
As an American, I thank the General for his service.
