Last night, (March 2) after Senator Bunning backed down to frantic pressure from his own party, the Senate passed stopgap legislation to extend help benefits for the jobless and to keep federal highway dollars flowing. The vote was 78-19. Bunning's actions shamed a slim majority of GOP Senators into supporting the measure.
Sen. Jim Bunning (R-KY), Mad dog Bunning, as some are calling him, the Associated Press called him , "a disagreeable old geezer"-- anyway the old obstructionist caved to GOP pressure. He made the party of No sayers look like who they are, a bunch of mean and nasty scrooges, and his refusal to block the extension of unemployment benefits was bad PR, even the rubes were seeing through the Repubs smoke screen.Under intense GOP pressure, Bunning stood down, ended his one-man filibuster, and allowed the Senate to pass an extension of unemployment benefits for hundreds of thousands of Americans.
The "crazy" Senator, the title many have used to describe him, claimed that he was standing up for fiscal responsibility. He wanted the Senate to vote on a bill to pay for unemployment benefits
Before the vote, he said, " I hope Senate Democrats tonight vote for their own pay-fors and show Americans that they are committed to fiscal discipline. I will be watching them closely and checking off the hypocrites one by one," he said. This is first class BS. Bunning voted no on pay-as-you-go legislation. He is the hypocrite and is a truth challenged individual..
