U.S. government to reduce GHG emissions

Will the Federal government really reduce its GHG emissions? Will the Federal government really reduce its GHG emissions?

The U.S. government has announced its intention to reduce its GHG emissions by 28% by 2020. Apparently President Obama issued an executive order.

It’s funny that I am finding myself taking a much more cynical view of the Obama presidency after the state of the union address. I’m not sure what it is, yet, but something about everything coming out of the White House now seems to strike me as political chess less so than it used to. Maybe I was swept up in the honeymoon period for longer than some, maybe I truly believed in what Obama was saying for the past year, or maybe I just wanted to. Read more

Nuclear Talks With Russia "really close"

U.S. President Barack Obama is negotiating with Russia to reduce numbers of Nuclear WeaponsU.S. President Barack Obama is negotiating with Russia to reduce numbers of Nuclear WeaponsThe U.S. and Russia have been going through some major talks about nuclear issues over the past few months, and several times along the way other issues, like the Copenhagen summit or arguments about missile placements or Afghanistan have gotten in the way or delayed negotiations, but now a senior U.S. arms control official says that the two nations are “really close” to agreement.

What does “really close” actually mean? Well, that part we can’t be sure of. What we can be sure of is that this is getting a lot of press and is something that both countries want to do, so we can assume that they are certainly making progress and that something will happen in the near future. The Fed Creates New Tools To Deal With the Recession

Money creates MoneyMoney creates MoneyThe U.S. Federal Reserve is attempting to create another way for them get money out of the banking system: the program would be called the term deposit facility. Essentially it would enable banks and other financial institutions to ear interest on loans to the central bank. Right now banks can loan money to the Fed overnight, and earn interest on that overnight loan- A term deposit facility would allow them to make loans of much longer duration and earn more interest on those loans.

"Term deposits would be one of several tools that the Federal Reserve could employ to drain reserves to support the effective implementation of monetary policy," said the Fed. Read more

China Calls the U.S. out to the WTO

Tired out by the details...Tired out by the details...China is sounding a bit skeptical about the U.S. tire tariffs, and probably with good reason. This one is coming back to the surface after a few months of being overshadowed by many other issues of international concern and diplomacy- when you are trying to figure out the environmental road map for the world to save the world and arguing about a global recession and what to do about it, well, you sort of put the discontent about import taxes on one item on the backburner. The thing about the tires, though, are that they are a big ticket item and both the U.S. and China know it. The U.S. is basically running into some trouble with them because we don’t want their tires to cost less than our tires, and China is arguing over World Trade Organization (WTO) rules that are in a bit of  a grey area from earlier in the decade. And so it goes. Read more

International Bank Tax? Um, no.International Bank Tax? Um, no.Yeah! You want to see an international throwdown? Propose an international financial tax to the U.S. You think we’ve sent out troops and secret missions in the last 50 years? Don’t mess with the financial rules, my friends.

The G20, fresh from its third meeting of the year (yikes!) is still cautious about being optimistic, and, in fact, is cautious about doing anything at all. It’s one of those situations where everyone is feeling the heat from home, everyone is somewhat aware of a deep, deep problem, but everyone is also unwilling to really do anything about it. The U.S. Will Need to Start Working More Closely With the Chinese MilitaryThe U.S. Will Need to Start Working More Closely With the Chinese MilitaryCall it the changing of the guard, call it the new world order, or call it just the way things go- the U.S. and China are now holding high level talks about working more closely together militarily in the future. China has far more people than the U.S., holds a large chunk of U.S. debt, and recently overtook the U.S. as the number one polluter on the planet, as far as countries go. None of those in and of themselves mean anything dramatic, but taken together the represent symbols of a shifting power structure around the world. China also has a major voice in the Copenhagen summit and whatever environmental/ climate change agreement can hope to be made in the years that come. Read more

U.S. Pressed by the EU on Climate Change

Flag of PrideFlag of PrideIn a move that should surprise no one, the EU is pressing the U.S. to do more on climate change. This was called for earlier this week by the UN and is warranted with everything going on around climate change.

Here are a few points to consider:

1.    The U.S. is the #2 emitter of carbon emissions in the world, only recently falling from #1. 2.    The U.S. has around 300 million people out of the world’s 6.6 billion or more. Do the division: We are 1/22 of the world’s population and the second largest contributor to the problem. 3.    The U.S. refused to ratify the Kyoto Protocol.4.    The U.S. is ignoring the Copenhagen climate summit as a deadline for passing meaningful climate change legislation. bin Laden Tape on the Internet

Osama bin Laden is attempting international foreign relations diplomacy with the EU? Something like that. Proving that he is every bit a politician on a mission, Osama bin Laden has released a recording in which he asks the EU to diplomatically ditch the U.S. and take forces out of Afghanistan. Netanyahu, center, with U.S. politiciansNetanyahu, center, with U.S. politiciansSince the creation of Israel in the middle of the 20th Century as, among other things, a homeland for Jews persecuted around the world, there has been an uneasy peace that may better be described as a slow battle between Israel and the Palestinian states that surround it. That battle has erupted in the Gaza Strip more than a few times and has erupted in smaller ways with many of the other states. Through it all the U.S. has stood behind Israel, supplying machines, guns, training, bombs- whatever was needed for the military. As well, the U.S. has provided diplomatic arguments for the existence, relevance and necessity of Israel as a Jewish state. From starting peace talks to engaging with other countries outside of the middle east in necessary diplomacy, the U.S. has been a staunch ally of Israel and all that it stands for. Read more

Britain and the U.S. stay focused in Afghanistan

Fresh off a two day summit with China, Obama must have a lot on his mind regarding international politics. Speaking of international politics, remember that war that is going on in Afghanistan? The one that has been going on since 2001? The one that sort of feels like the way everybody talks about how Vietnam felt- except that no one is really protesting anymore and apparently someone figured out the right balance that the American public can put up with while keeping a war going and the military-industrial complex humming along…

Well anyway, what’s next? Read more
