U.S. Finds Itself Stuck Between Arms Treaty with Taiwan and Desire to Befriend China

Taiwan's plans to purchase new F-16's are stalledTaiwan's plans to purchase new F-16's are stalledPerhaps file this one under the growing file of Politics is Money stories- a U.S. business group head has accused Obama of compromising the security of Taiwan in the interest of promoting a better relationship with China. An interesting accusation, as Obama certainly wants to get closer, well, as close as possible, to the Chinese government- that is essential to the long-term safety and well-being of the United States and the world’s economy. But as the U.S. is historically a supporter of Taiwan’s government, would Obama truly be willing to short Taiwan just to cozy up to China? Or is this essentially a business move by the group leader, trying to use his political clout to get a good deal moving for Taiwan?

Chinese Police Arrested Thousands in Relation to Internet Porn this past year.Chinese Police Arrested Thousands in Relation to Internet Porn this past year. The Internet is a wild place- on here you can do and say just about anything you want to. There are a few rules coming into play, like the recent disclosure law stating that bloggers and related online posters need to disclose if they have been compensated by companies or products they are writing about. And of course there are rules where you have to pay for the provider to get the Internet to your house or laptop or whatever- but in general, once you are on there, you can say or post whatever you’d like. Renewable Energy Sources Like this one are now guaranteed a market in ChinaRenewable Energy Sources Like this one are now guaranteed a market in ChinaA new Chinese law is requiring power grid operators to purchase all of the electricity produced through renewable energy generation! This is an exciting development in my book. It is the second major move to hit the world’s stage since Copenhagen fell, and it is worthwhile to take a quick glance at who and where the forward thinking is coming from: Read more

China Calls the U.S. out to the WTO

Tired out by the details...Tired out by the details...China is sounding a bit skeptical about the U.S. tire tariffs, and probably with good reason. This one is coming back to the surface after a few months of being overshadowed by many other issues of international concern and diplomacy- when you are trying to figure out the environmental road map for the world to save the world and arguing about a global recession and what to do about it, well, you sort of put the discontent about import taxes on one item on the backburner. The thing about the tires, though, are that they are a big ticket item and both the U.S. and China know it. The U.S. is basically running into some trouble with them because we don’t want their tires to cost less than our tires, and China is arguing over World Trade Organization (WTO) rules that are in a bit of  a grey area from earlier in the decade. And so it goes. Read more

Cheers to Copenhagen

Cheers!Cheers!Yesterday I talked about Obama needing to put on the S suit on the plane on the way over to Copenhagen- he did. While it’s nowhere near what everyone had been hoping for when Copenhagen started to gather steam earlier this year, it is in fact more than everyone had been expecting as the summit grew closer. With deadlocks around emissions cut commitments and monetary contributions from industrialized nations, Obama was walking into a snakepit. But he did it anyway. "This progress did not come easily and we know this progress alone is not enough ... We've come a long way but we have much further to go," said Obama. Read more

China Compares Tibet to the Confederacy, Their Gov't to Lincoln

Would Lincoln Identify with the Chinese Government?Would Lincoln Identify with the Chinese Government? If you were to draw connections between the Dalai Lama, the Chinese government and Obama, what kind of chart would you draw? What connections would you see? Throw in Abraham Lincoln and take into account the history of race in the United States and how would you draw the picture?

This past week Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Qin Gang said that Obama should be sympathetic to the Chinese opposition to the Dalai Lama and Tibet’s independence, especially as a black president who tips his hat to Abraham Lincoln and the importance of abolition in both the history of America and Obama’s own opportunities.

That wouldn’t have been my first connection. But let’s see Qin’s point: Read more

The U.S. Will Need to Start Working More Closely With the Chinese MilitaryThe U.S. Will Need to Start Working More Closely With the Chinese MilitaryCall it the changing of the guard, call it the new world order, or call it just the way things go- the U.S. and China are now holding high level talks about working more closely together militarily in the future. China has far more people than the U.S., holds a large chunk of U.S. debt, and recently overtook the U.S. as the number one polluter on the planet, as far as countries go. None of those in and of themselves mean anything dramatic, but taken together the represent symbols of a shifting power structure around the world. China also has a major voice in the Copenhagen summit and whatever environmental/ climate change agreement can hope to be made in the years that come. Read more

DPJ on the Road to CopenhagenDPJ on the Road to CopenhagenWith Copenhagen less than 100 days away, nations around the world are scrambling to define their positions, make the outlines of what their demands will be and dig their heels in around important issues- and no one wants to be left behind. The new government in Japan is no exception.

Last weekend Japan voted the untested Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) who took over for the sitting party that had been in power for more than 50 years. While they of course cannot change any of the commitments in place, but they are showing that they can play politics with the best of them out there. Read more

Politics as Unusual in Asia

Map of East AsiaMap of East AsiaOver the weekend Japan made an historic change in its governing- after over 50 years of virtually uninterrupted power, the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) was ousted by the most powerful political tool of all- a democratic vote. Changing a 5 decade ruling party is big- and so is North Korea sending a diplomatic delegation to China. Both are happening as this first week of September gets underway. Read more

Obama Stresses Human Rights with China

With so many issues swirling around the globe right now- from the economic turmoil to the coming Copenhagen summit to the wars in and around the Middle East- it is good to see Obama holding strong on requests that China respect and protect the rights of religious and ethnic minorities.

High-level talks between Washington and Beijing are beginning this week and Obama’s message of respect for minorities in China by their government were part of his initial statements, setting the context for the conversations to come during the US-China Strategic and Economic Dialogue. Recent clashes between the Uighurs and the Han in western China have brought human rights to center stage as the talks begin. Read more
